7 Steps of the Hero’s Journey - Joseph Campbell

The 7 Steps of the Hero’s Journey is a simplified version of Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth, a narrative framework that appears in myths, literature, and storytelling worldwide. These seven stages outline the transformation of a protagonist (the "hero") as they go from an ordinary person to someone who overcomes challenges and achieves growth.

The 7 Steps of the Hero’s Journey

  1. The Call to Adventure
  2. The hero receives a challenge, invitation, or event that disrupts their ordinary life.
  3. Example: Luke Skywalker finding Princess Leia’s message in Star Wars or Frodo receiving the One Ring in The Lord of the Rings.
  4. The Refusal of the Call
  5. The hero hesitates due to fear, doubt, or reluctance. They might not feel ready or may resist change.
  6. Example: Harry Potter doubts himself when he learns he’s a wizard, or Simba refuses to return to Pride Rock in The Lion King.
  7. Meeting the Mentor
  8. A mentor, guide, or wise figure appears to provide wisdom, training, or encouragement.
  9. Example: Obi-Wan Kenobi guides Luke, Morpheus trains Neo in The Matrix, or Gandalf leads Frodo.
  10. Crossing the Threshold
  11. The hero commits to the journey and enters the unknown world, leaving their comfort zone behind.
  12. Example: Dorothy stepping into Oz, Alice falling down the rabbit hole, or Katniss entering the Hunger Games arena.
  13. Tests, Allies, and Enemies
  14. The hero faces obstacles, makes allies, and confronts enemies. These experiences shape their skills and character.
  15. Example: Harry forming friendships with Ron and Hermione while facing challenges at Hogwarts.
  16. The Ordeal
  17. The hero faces their greatest challenge, a life-changing battle, or a dark moment of crisis.
  18. Example: Frodo struggling against the power of the Ring, Neo fighting Agent Smith, or Moana facing Te Kā.
  19. The Return and Transformation
  20. The hero returns home, transformed by their journey, and often brings new wisdom, power, or a gift for their world.
  21. Example: Simba restoring balance to the Pride Lands, Mulan bringing honor to her family, or Luke Skywalker embracing his destiny.
