The addition of new filesystems allow your system to mount and access disks and files created with other systems. So for example if you wanted to read a Windows XP disk you might need to install support for NTFS file systems before being able to access the Windows XP filesystem.
gparted is a great GUI tool for manipulating file systems. However, Before installing gparted, you might want to install support for any file systems you want to be able to access using gparted.
Other filesystems can be added at a later date, however, a reboot of your system may be required in order for gparted to be able to use them.
